Ellmau at the Wilder Kaiser: location and village atmosphere

Ellmau is situated at around 820 metres above sea level, on the sunny southern side of the impressive Wilder Kaiser mountain range. The village is part of the Wilder Kaiser region and is known for its well-kept centre, traditional Tyrolean architecture and stunning mountain backdrop. Ellmau is compact and welcoming, with restaurants, cafés and shops all within easy walking distance.

Winter holidays in Ellmau: skiing via the Hartkaiser

In winter, Ellmau offers direct access to the slopes via the Hartkaiserbahn. This modern gondola connects the village straight to the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental, one of the largest ski areas in Austria. With more than 270 kilometres of pistes, the SkiWelt is ideal for beginners, families and intermediate skiers, featuring wide slopes, excellent grooming and a high level of snow reliability.

Summer in Ellmau: hiking, panoramas and family activities

The Hartkaiser is also the place to start in summer. From the mountain station, you can walk beautiful routes with stunning views of the Wilder Kaiser and the Brixental valley.

For families with children, Ellmi's Zauberwelt is an absolute must-see: an adventure world on the mountain, especially for children. The Hintersteiner See, just outside Ellmau, is also a great place to walk and cool off. You can also swim in the Kaiserbad and play a round of golf on the Wilder Kaiser golf course.

Spring and autumn: peace, nature and tradition

Spring and autumn are the best times to experience Ellmau. Then cows on the alpine pastures, local festivals and quiet hiking trails dominate the scene. These are great months if you love nature, without the hustle and bustle of the high season.

Is Ellmau a quiet resort, or is there also après-ski and nightlife?
Ellmau is mainly known for its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. You will find cosy bars and good restaurants for an enjoyable evening, but not lively après-ski like in larger ski resorts. Many visitors appreciate this balance between tranquillity and sociability.

How snow-reliable is Ellmau in winter, especially at the start and end of the season?
We are often asked this question by winter sports enthusiasts who go skiing outside of the school holidays. Ellmau is not located on a glacier, but it does have modern snow cannons and the altitude of the SkiWelt, which means that skiing is often possible in December and March.
