Almhütte Unterhofer

We rented the Unterhofer hut on the mountain for a week again this year. Fantastic views and a quiet location. There is a family of cattle grazing right next door who always say hello and goodbye to us. Although there was a young calf, they had no problem at all with our 11-year-old Labrador. The hut itself has everything you need. A large brick/roofed charcoal barbecue and a gas barbecue outside, as well as a wood-burning stove in the hut itself. Electricity for TV/light/fridge/filter coffee machine/stove is available and payable with 1€ coins (these are provided by Hans the owner). There is also a wood-burning stove in the bathroom for hot water. Wood is roughly pre-cut and can be chopped as required (appropriate tools available on site). Fresh, ice-cold drinking water comes from the rustic fountain. The landlord, the neighbours and the people in the village in general were all friendly and courteous. A pleasant change from the everyday grind of a big city. Directly from the hut there is a hiking trail that leads up to the Groneck (2691m) for experienced hikers. There is also a hiking trail directly to the Leutschacher Alm. Enjoy the peace and quiet at the hut itself and see the Milky Way and satellites with the naked eye on a cloudless night or use it as a starting point for day trips in the area (Großglockner, Raggaschlucht, Wörthersee, Pyramiden Kogel, Turracher Höhe incl. Nocky Flitzer summer toboggan run) - there's something for everyone here. We can only recommend it without reservation and have already booked again for next year.

A very special place, remote and high on a mountain with beautiful views and only a few cows as neighbours. The access road is an adventure and the hut very basic but exactly what you expect in such a place. Farmer Hans takes you up the first time and shows you how the wood stove/boiler and electricity meter works. There is a lot to do in the area. We visited the Groppensteinschlucht, Kreuzeckbahn, Goldeckbahn, Mölltaler glettscher, Ankogelbahn and the 3 countries point with the Kärtnencard. Super many possibilities for walks in the area and above all a place to completely unwind and perhaps spot wildlife. At least we saw a deer and a fox.
