Tips for your winter sports holiday in Austria

Is it your first time going on a winter sports holiday in Austria? Then the tips below might come in handy:

  • Choose the best ski area for you and your friends or family. There are so many ski resorts in Austria that it can be difficult to choose where to go. Read up well, choose a ski area that suits your level and interests.
  • Book your accommodation on time. To avoid disappointment, it is important to book your accommodation in time. On Ferienhaus-Tirol.eu you will find a wide variety of holiday homes in different price ranges.
  • Don't forget to rent your winter sports equipment: If you don't have your own winter sports equipment, you can rent it from one of the many ski rental shops in Austria. Are you an experienced winter sportsman? Then at least don't forget to take your gear with you too.
  • Take lessons if you are a beginner! If you have never skied or snowboarded before, it is advisable to take lessons to learn the basic skills. That way, you keep the chance of an accident or injury at its lowest. Winter sports in Austria are done for fun, not to see what the inside of a hospital looks like.
  • Dress warmly: It's pretty cold up there in the mountains. Make sure you wear warm clothes (tip: lots of thin layers! That insulates better), a good winter coat, gloves and a hat.
  • You might associate sunscreen with beach holidays, but make no mistake: even in the mountains, the sun can burn you badly. So protect your face in particular with a good sunscreen (SPF 50).
  • Also not wrong: while you are in Austria, try some local dishes. You won't find a wiener schnitzel like they make in Austria anywhere else. Tasty local (speciality) beers also taste best here. Even hot chocolate tastes even better after a long day on the long slopes in Austria.

Even more tips for sporting activities in Austria

Once you are in Austria, there is much more to explore than just the slopes. Curious about what else you can do? Eerde we already briefly mentioned them, but below you will find them listed again:

  • Cross-country skiing: Cross-country skiing is a popular winter activity in Austria and offers a great way to explore the landscape. A cross-country ski trail is called a 'loipe', and is specifically designed for cross-country skiers. There are many trails available, both for beginners and advanced skiers.
  • Snowshoeing: If you are looking for a quieter way to enjoy the snow, snowshoeing might be for you. You can rent these special shoes from most ski rental shops in Austria. Note: you are not supposed to walk on a cross-country trail; that way, the footprints can cause cross-country skiers to hurt themselves. Instead, there are plenty of trails specifically for snowshoeing.
  • Tobogganing is literally going down a slope or track in a toboggan (sledge). Although tobogganing also exists as an Olympic sport, here tobogganing is a more recreational variant. Steering and braking are important techniques, so starting carefully is definitely recommended. Tobogganing is a fun activity for the whole family.
  • Ice skating; where there is snow and ice, skating is often possible. Own skates are not necessary, because like winter sports gear, skates are also easy to rent. On Austria's frozen lakes, fun for young and old alike!
  • And last but not least: après-ski. It is an important part of winter sports culture in Austria and is seen as a traditional way to end the day. With a fun party, of course!
