Krimml Waterfalls: Austria’s most impressive natural spectacle

The Krimml Waterfalls are Europe’s highest waterfalls. A powerful natural highlight that perfectly fits an active holiday in Austria.

Krimml Waterfalls – impressive force of nature

The Krimmler Wasserfälle are among Austria’s most impressive natural sights. With a total drop of 380 metres, divided into three cascades, they are the highest waterfalls in Europe. Meltwater from the Hohe Tauern mountains plunges into the valley with immense force, creating a spectacular combination of sound, spray and alpine scenery.

Hiking along Europe’s highest waterfalls

A well-maintained hiking trail of around 4 kilometres (return) leads along the waterfalls. You decide how far you want to go: from the lower waterfall to the upper viewpoints. Several platforms offer impressive panoramic views. The trail is clearly marked and suitable for families with children who enjoy walking.

Best time to visit the Krimml Waterfalls

The waterfalls are most powerful in June and July, when snowmelt feeds the Krimmler Ache. During peak summer months, visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon offers a more relaxed experience with fewer visitors

Perfect to combine with the Wildkogel Arena

If you are staying in the Neukirchen or Bramberg region, the Krimml Waterfalls can easily be combined with activities in the Wildkogel Arena. In winter, this area is known as a family-friendly ski resort with long descents and the famous toboggan run. In summer, it is an ideal base for hiking, mountain lifts and nature experiences – with the waterfalls as the absolute highlight.

Distance and accessibility

The Krimmler Wasserfälle are located in western Salzburg, close to the Tyrolean border. If you stay in a Holiday home in Wald im Pinzgau, you can reach the waterfalls in about 20 minutes by car. Parking is available near the entrance. Public transport connections via Zell am See and regional buses also make the waterfalls accessible without a car.

Not entirely. The lower section is easily accessible, but for the higher trail a baby carrier or sturdy walking shoes are recommended.

How busy are the Krimml Waterfalls during peak season?
May to October is the usual period when the path is fully accessible. It can be quite busy in July and August, especially around midday. Arriving early is therefore advisable.

Yes, but be aware of slippery paths and increased spray. Good hiking shoes are especially important in wet conditions.
