A trip through Austria: 10 Must-See locations from your holiday home in Austria

In beautiful Austria, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful countries in the world, there are countless breathtaking locations to explore. Austria is characterised by some of the most impressive mountains and lakes you can imagine. Today, from Ferienhaus-Tirol.eu, we want to share 10 amazing places with you. Whether you are looking for a holiday home for 10 people or want to enjoy the charm of the chalets, with these locations within easy reach, there is always something special to see or do. With over 4,000 holiday homes across Austria in our selection, there is always a perfect base for your adventure.

1. Gosau: a breath of fresh air in the middle of the Austrian mountains

As we begin our journey through Austria, our first stop is the beautiful village of Gosau. Sandwiched between impressive mountains, this hidden gem is home to some of the most beautiful little churches you can imagine. You can often walk around in peace, as if you have discovered a secret piece of paradise for yourself. Gosau's atmosphere and breathtaking scenery are overwhelming and make it a must-visit when you are near Hallstatt.

Looking for a holiday home in Austria and want to be near Gosau? Then check out our selection of holiday homes within a 20km radius of Gosau. If you have specific needs, for example if you are looking for a holiday home with sauna, you can easily filter them.

2. Gosausee: Where natural beauty and adventure go hand in hand

Gosausee

After exploring Gosau, we recommend driving further south to the Gosausee lake. This beautiful lake is just a 15-minute drive from Gosau and offers breathtaking views. Set between the Dachstein glacier and majestic mountain peaks, the lake is a must-see. The area offers a beautiful hiking trail that goes all the way around the lake. Perfect also for a walk with your dog should you be looking for a holiday home with your dog. A bonus is the cosy lodge by the lake, where you can stop for a delicious meal. For the adventurous among us, there is the option of renting a boat and exploring the lake in a different way. Another fascinating attraction in the area is the gondola ride up, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. It is also the gateway to Austria's infamous 'Skyladder', an adventure that should definitely be on every visitor's bucket list.

So make sure to visit this amazing lake if you get the chance. It is truly one of the most beautiful places you will ever see.

3. A ride to the top: Austria's impressive Großglockner Pass

After admiring the Gosausee, we recommend continuing your journey to the Großglockner Pass. This pass is the highest accessible place by car in Austria, at an altitude of 2,504 metres, and is among the highest roads in all of Europe. The name Großglockner Pass comes from the Großglockner, the highest mountain peak in Austria which is an impressive 3,798 metres high. Keep in mind that the toll is €36.50 for a passenger car, but the breathtaking views and the experience you get in return are worth every penny. The splendour of the colourful mountains will surely amaze you. Once at the top of the pass, the roads can seem somewhat intimidating, but they are absolutely doable for the average traveller.

Looking for a holiday home or chalet in Austria near Großglockner? Then take a look at our carefully selected holiday homes within a range of 20 km around Großglockner.

4. Dive into the beauty of the Pasterze Glacier

After the breathtaking experience at the Großglockner Pass, the next destination is the impressive Pasterze Glacier. This glacier, the largest in Austria, is set in an enchanting landscape. There is ample parking and several paths leading to the foot of the glacier.

Descending to the foot of the glacier, visitors are greeted by spectacular views. The glacier itself is a wonder of nature, while the lake offers a grey-coloured beauty. Surrounded by imposing mountains, including the Grossglockner, the place exudes a special charm. It is an absolute must to visit when you are in the Hohe Tauern National Park

5. A spectacular waterfall day at the Krimmler Wasserfälle

Our next recommendation after visiting the Grossglockner and the Pasterze glacier are the breathtaking Krimmler Wasserfälle. At 300 metres high, these waterfalls are the highest in Austria and consist of three plateaus with the largest being over 140 metres. It will cost you about five euros' entrance fee and a walk of about 30 minutes to get to the lowest waterfall, which in our opinion is the most impressive of all. For the more adventurous among us, there is also the option to hike to the top of the falls. As icing on the cake, you will also find a cosy restaurant there where you can enjoy a delicious lunch. If you love waterfalls, the Krimmler Wasserfälle should be an absolute must-visit during your holiday in Austria.

Finding a holiday home near the Krimmler Wasserfälle in Austria is made a lot easier thanks to our selection of around 160 holiday homes in the immediate vicinity.

6. Dive into history with a visit to Hallstatt

After visiting the Krimmler Wasserfälle, we set our sights on the picturesque town of Hallstatt. This place seems straight out of a fairy tale, nestled on the shores of the eponymous Hallstatt lake and surrounded by majestic mountains. Hallstatt's charm lies in the 16th-century alpine houses that adorn its streets. Once a village revolving around salt mines, today Hallstatt is a popular destination for tourists. From Salzburg, it takes just an hour's drive to reach this enchanting town.

7. Wolfgangsee: Austria's answer to exotic beaches

After visiting Hallstatt, the route leads us to the enchanting Wolfgangsee lake. This lake is about an hour's drive from Salzburg and can be easily discovered on the route to Hallstatt. The sight of the surrounding mountains reflecting in the clear water will no doubt leave you speechless. What immediately catches the eye is the water, which turns blue in hues that would be the envy of even the most exotic destinations. During a break along the way, you can enjoy a panoramic view of this beautiful landscape, an experience that will no doubt remain etched in the memory. If you have the opportunity, spending some extra time at Wolfgangsee is definitely recommended.

8. A day trip to the Schafberg: experiences to remember

Our journey then takes us to the nearby Schafberg, which is easily accessible from the Wolfgangsee. You can take a ferry from St Gilgen and then take the historic steam train up the mountain. A ticket for the train journey costs around 30 euros. An alternative, cost-saving option is to take the cable car from St. Gilgen, or of course you can hike up the mountain yourself, should you fancy an adventure. Once at the top, you will be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. There are several cafés where you can enjoy lunch and treat yourself to the magnificent view. You can also choose to just walk around the area and explore the natural beauty at your own pace.

9. Zillertal Alps: from social media to reality

From Schafberg, let's continue the journey to the breathtaking Zillertal Alps. This destination is a bit further away, being more than a four-hour drive from Salzburg and right on the border of Italy and Austria. A particular highlight in the Zillertal Alps is the Olperer hike. This route takes you up to an imposing peak of over 11,000 feet. Along the way, you encounter a bridge that offers a stunning panorama of the lake below. This bridge is widely known on social media. If you continue the route, you will find a cosy mountain hut where you can eat something while enjoying the beautiful view. On the same lake is an impressive dam - yet another place that treats you to phenomenal views. The Zillertal Alps are downright enchanting, a destination not to be missed.

10. time travel into the 12th century: Burgruine Steinschloss

For the last stop of this unforgettable journey, we take you to the mysterious Burgruine Steinschloss (Mariahof). This location immediately grabs your attention from the highway. Worth a turn, the castle is as fascinating up close as it is from a distance. Built in the 12th century, the castle with its five round towers exudes a certain magic you don't want to miss. Most amazingly, entry to this historic gem is free. So feel free to follow the path to this castle and explore it at your own pace.

We have privately rented 2 large holiday homes in Germany for more than 10 years, before that also in Spain and Greece, so we are very familiar with the rental industry. We know what is important on your holiday.

At the time we had the houses in Germany, I was asked by an acquaintance to take over the rental of some large holiday homes in Hopfgarten and Kirchberg for him. This grew into Ferienhaus-Tirol.eu. Today, you can find accommodations in all federal states of Austria on Ferienhaus-Tirol.eu.
